She showed some articles which she made from the willow and also explained all the things, large and small, from a deer to table decorations. After refreshments the business was dealt with, which included final arrangements for the coffee morning to be held in Hatherleigh Old Schools on Tuesday October 10. It was stated that there was no coach pick-up in Okehampton for the visit to Cardiff, for the Christmas Market, which meant going to Exeter to meet the coach. The skittle team had won their first match in the WI League. It was suggested that a Christmas meal be had in the Victorian Tearooms, Okehampton between November 6 and 11. It was also suggested that following the success of the Cookery Book published by members, that a book of household hints could be produced. The next walk is at Belstone on October 27. The winners of the competition (a foliage arrangement) and FOM were Annie Warren and Ethel Nancekivell, The next meeting is in Exbourne Village Hall on Thursday November 2 (note the time) at 2.30pm. History Society The History Society AGM will be held on the 13th November in Old Schools at 7.30pm followed by a talk from Sophie McCormack of Beaford Arts on the ?Hidden Histories Project?. The annual subscription of £10 will be due at this meeting. Visitors welcome at a cost of £2 which includes tea or coffee and biscuits. At the last meeting in October we welcomed Andrew Thompson who gave a talk on ?Okehampton, Gateway To Northern Dartmoor?. Andrew was the Manager of Okehampton ?Museum of Dartmoor Life? for four years and is now a Heritage Consultant. He gave an overview of 2,000 years of occupation and showed an aerial photograph which revealed the site of a Roman Fort which was found near the Crediton Road and then excavated during the 80`s. It was interesting to see the changes and formations over the centuries of industry, housing, markets and retail buildings in Okehampton. The castle built after the Norman Conquest and which once had the largest deer park in the land fell into ruin after the beheading of Henry de Courtney, Earl of Devon by Henry VIII, and still sits above the River Okement drawing many visitors and artists. The piece was Petite Suite de Ballet by Eric Ball. We unfortunately drew 18th to play which meant it was a very long day with lots of waiting around! But we had a great night out afterwards celebrating and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you to all of you who supported our Cider and Pasty evening despite the weather! We had a great night and hope you did too. We are now revisiting The Journal of Philaeas Fogg which saw us win the 2016 Regional Finals in Torquay. We have chosen this as our ?own choice? test piece in The South West Brass Band Contest in Torquay on the 4th November. It is just the most amazing piece of music as those of you who came to our open rehearsal last year will remember.
