HISTORY SOCIETY - May 8
HATHERLEIGH
Hatherleigh History Society At our last meeting we were pleased to have Dr Todd Gray with us speaking about ?Elizabethan Insults in Devon?. This could have been a little risqu had it not been the manner in which Todd explained these insults, or the amount of star asterisks on the screen! The courts and church dealt with insults and slander cases swiftly and apologies were often made infront of a whole congregation. Both men and women were called drunkards, beggars and witches but men were ridiculed differently than women, men were mocked for being unintelligent, whereas only women were called scolds or eavesdroppers. Like today, sex was used to ridicule and insult and `mooning` is not a modern invention, it was a very popular action in those times! We learnt new words such as ninnycock, poxy, platter-faced, punk, wittol, ninny-hammer and hollow-mouthed. Unlike at a WI meeting where Todd gave this talk, I`m pleased to say that no one got up and walked out, there was a great deal of laughter that evening. Our next meeting in Old Schools is on the 8th May at 7.30pm, when Debs Laing-Trengove will be speaking about ?The Vanished Farms and Smallholdings in the Parish of Hatherleigh?. Visitors and guests welcome, 2. We are also delighted that Dr Todd Gray who is President of the Devon Association will be back with us on the 18th May to speak about ?The Distinctiveness of Devon?. This will be a stop off during a walk from Lyme Regis starting on the 12th May and ending at Hartland on the 22nd May, he will be speaking each evening at a different town venue. This event is open to anyone who would like to join us, there is no entry fee but donations towards tea &coffee and cake/biscuits whilst chatting to Todd after the talk, would be welcome. The latest meeting was held in Sampford Courtenay village hall on April 6. Everyone was welcomed and Jerusalem was sung. The speaker was Debbie Hastings, who has held many horticultural postions during her career. These included Head Gardener at Dulwich College and Birbeck College. After tea and biscuits the business was dealt with. The Coffee Morning held in Old Schools, Hatherleigh had raised 220. It was decided that at the next Coffee Morning in October, there should be more savoury items and not as much bric-a-brac. The first meeting to arrange the Okehampton Show entry is to be held on April 20 at Ethel Nancekivell's. The Exbourne Neighbourhood Plan Consultation Day is on May 6 in the village hall and the WI has been asked to supply tea/coffee and biscuits. They are Ann Langworthy and Shirley KIng. The next walk is at the Fox and Hounds, Bridestowe on April 28. Unseen Images from the Beaford Archive - June 25
HATHERLEIGH
On Sunday 25th June, 2-5pm at the Community Centre, Hatherleigh will see the much-anticipated launch of HIDDEN HISTORIES OF RURAL NORTH DEVON: OPENING UP THE BEAFORD ARCHIVE, a vibrant and unique three-year project for the people of North Devon, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Hidden Histories will digitise around 10,000 unseen black and white images from the extensive James Ravilious and Roger Deakins photographic archives and make these publicly available on a new searchable website. A host of volunteering opportunities are on offer to assist with the digitisation, cataloguing, and preservation of the images, as well as the collection of oral histories from people with special insights into the photographs.
Locals and visitors alike are invited to attend NEW PERSPECTIVES ? a free event to celebrate the launch of the project. Formerly unseen images from the Archive collections will be on display, shedding new light on our local heritage, and allowing attendees to have a first glimpse at a small sample of the 3000 plus contact sheets that will be published online later this year. We look forward to learning more about these and hearing about your knowledge and experience of the familiar places and faces captured on film.
Members of the Hidden Histories team will be on hand to share information about the volunteering opportunities available and what to expect in the forthcoming months and years of the project. An Oral Historian will be in attendance and looking for people interested in becoming trained in oral history techniques, to help support in the ongoing collection of stories and memories.
From 3:30pm, there will be two talks about the local history and landscape, with details to be confirmed.
There will be free refreshments provided throughout, and this event is ‘drop-in’ so no pre-booking is needed.
Hidden Histories of rural north Devon: Opening up the Beaford Archive has been further supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Elmgrant Trust, Fullabrook CIC, Leader 5 Torridge and North Devon, and the North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Emperor's New Clothes - July 14
Winkleigh
The Emperor?s New Clothes? will be performed by Illyria who originally performed this timeless Hans Christian Andersen story in 2000, when it was the Critic?s choice at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and attracted multiple 5-star reviews on a sell-out UK tour. Beneath the fancy clothes of the tale lies something more meaningful; human weaknesses are satirised mercilessly; and a capacity for loving is the highest value. There are larger-than-life characters, lots and lots to join in with ? and an ending that will leave you helpless with laughter! Location EX19 8SN
