Flower and Produce Show - August 19
HATHERLEIGH
Gardening Club On Friday, 14th July we leave the confines of Old Schools, to go travelling. Not so far afield this time - a short trip up the motorway to Holcombe Court at Holcombe Rogus nr Wellington. A morning visit here (we plan to arrive about 11 am) will be followed by a visit to Dayspring Plants, a nursery specialising in herbaceous perennials, normally only wholesale but allowing our group visit. This is on the way home, near Exeter airport. As this is a self-drive venture, the cost will be minimal - £5 for Holcombe Court, which goes to the church and, may I suggest, a petrol contribution to your driver. A fee for Dayspring Plants will be met by the Club. There is, of course, the option, for those who may not be interested in the nursery, of just doing the morning - please make sure that everyone in your car is of the same mind!! And just to say, should you need reminding, that the Flower Show this year is on Saturday, August 19th and we hope to have schedules out by the end of the month. For any more information on any of the above or general club activities, do contact me on 47gills@gmail.com or 01837 810893 Susan Gill Location EX20 3HZ

Exbourne WI - September 7
SAMPFORD COURTNEY
WI Exbourne, Sampford Courtenay & Jacobstowe WI The latest meeting was held in the village hall on Thursday July 6. The president welcomed everyone and Jerusalem was sung. There was a good attendance to hear the speaker, who was Bernie Little from the Devon Grandparents Support Group. His daughter stopped him and his wife from seeing their grandchildren in 2011. It was a devestating blow and they were completely lost and obtained a dog to help fill their lives. The Group was started in 2014, so that people suffering from the same as them had someone to contact and talk to. There are about one million children in the country, who do not see their grandparents and according to the law, children and grandparents do not have any rights. It is very difficult to get any contact via the courts. Luckily, Bernie and his wife are now in contact with their grandchildren again. After tea the small amount of business was dealt with. There was a lot of correspondence, which included details of a trip to Cardiff Christmas Market, Denman break in May 2018, speakers preview day and the result of the 2017 resolutions. There was an update on the entry for Okehampton Show and final arrangements were made for the outing to Garden Cottage on August 3. The next trip for the Walking Group is to Fernworthy Reservoir on July 28 and there is to be a Jumble Sale in the village hall on Saturday September 2. Margaret Cleveland won both the Flower of the Month and the competition, which was for a family photgraph. Well done, Margaret. The next meeting is in Sampford Courtenay village hall on Thursday September 7 when the speaker will be Sophie Goodwin-Hughes of the Dartmoor Soap Company. Visitors are always welcome. Garden Studio open for Devon Open Studios - September 9
Bondleigh
Once again established Devon artist, Celia Olsson, will be welcoming visitors to her studio in the garden for Devon Open Studios between 9th and 24th September. This has been another year of travel for Celia ? south as far as Belize and north to Spitzbergen. As always Celia takes her sketchbooks to record the things she?s seen, which you will be able see when you visit. ?It?s hard to say which was the best place. The Azores were a delight (even on a wet day), Havana in Cuba was overwhelming and the fjords of Norway were just stunning?. She has come home with so many memories, which, with her sketchbooks, are the inspiration for the paintings she is working on at the moment. All this travel to far flung places doesn?t mean she?s forgotten home ? and she?s seen it from a different angle. Having breakfast on deck watching Ilfracombe and Combe Martin go past, albeit under a blanket of cloud, was a bit surreal. She is also producing paintings of woodland near home and of course beloved Dartmoor. Celia paints in a loose style mainly using watercolour because of the wonderful choice of vibrant colours, but also likes to experiment with acrylic inks and various texture media. She says watercolour is such an exciting media because you never know how it will turn out. She also runs watercolour classes locally, and is invited to demonstrate and run workshops for art groups all over the South West. At all these events she likes to encourage people to have a go without fear of failure. On Saturdays 16th and 23rd September Celia will be running workshops ?Playing with Colour?. At these workshops you will have fun mixing watercolours and creating textures. They are suitable for those who have never painted before and those who want to get out of a rut and experiment with new methods. They start at 2.30pm, finishing at 4pm with a cup of tea. The cost is £5 and booking is essential as space is limited. Celia?s studio will be open on 9th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 21st, 23rd and 24th September from 11am to 6pm. Location EX20 2AJ

The Devon Historic Churches Trust helps historic churches of all denominations when there is a need for urgent and important repairs to be made. By helping with this funding churches are being updated with Disabled facilities, Kitchens and Toilets which in turn ensures churches become community hubs. Unlike other countries, the church in Britain is not state funded nor are they financially supported by the church authorities. Each church must standalone. The DHCT helps communities ensure that their church survives for future generations. Location EX20 3RF

History Society - September 11
HATHERLEIGH
Hatherleigh History Society At the June meeting we were entertained by the speaker Simon Dell, who told the story of `Beatrice Chase`, a Dartmoor author. Born in 1874 in Harrow, Olive Katherine Parr was the eldest daughter of Charles Chase Parr, poet and cricketer and she believed she was descended from Henry V111`s wife of the same name. In her early years she joined the `Order of St Dominic` as a nun and first started writing poetry but later left the Order and went to work in the slums of London assisting her mother in `good works`, visiting women in Holloway Prison and helping street children and orphans. She and her mother in later years moved to Widecombe-in-the?Moor and it was here that she started writing and publishing her poems and stories under the name of `Beatrice Chase` as well as in her own name. As Simon Dell related his research about Beatrice Chase, it became obvious that this was a very complex, romantic, eccentric and `robust` woman, and certainly a formidable character! There will be no meeting in August. The next meeting is on the 11th September at 7.30pm in Old Schools, Liz Shakespeare will be talking about her book ?The Memory Be Green?, all welcome, guests and visitors £2. Location EX20 3JN
